The Center's collaborative educational and research efforts allow us to provide expert perspectives on industry issues that are beyond the ability of companies to address on their own. Currently, the Center is focusing on two strategic industry-wide research initiatives
Food Defense The Food Industry Center is working with the National Center for Food Protection and Defense (NCFPD), a Homeland Security Center of Excellence, located at the University of Minnesota to conduct research on protecting the nation's food supply from an intentional attack. The focus of this multi-disciplinary, multi-university research is on securing the food supply from deliberate food contamination that is designed to have catastrophic public health or economic results. TFIC is a coordinator of the economic analysis segment for NCFPD.
Food and Health The relationship between food, health, and the food industry is a second major research interest of The Food Industry Center. The Center's research has looked at school lunch programs, urban access to healthy foods, generational eating habits, and the food system and sustainability. The Center's research on food and health issues is closely alligned with the University President's Initiative on Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives, studying, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the impact of healthy foods on human health.
TFIC Supported Research The Sloan Foundation makes available one year Fellowships for post doctorate work or faculty on sabbatical. We invite anyone interested in spending a year with the Center, conducting research and participating in other Center activities, to contact the Director. TFIC must nominate you to the Sloan Foundation by the first of October each year.
In the past, The Food Industry Center funded research projects of faculty and students from around the University of Minnesota. Titles and researchers of these projects are listed in the Past Research section of the website.
